Our primary goal for 2023 is to bring NASAR's
Hug-A-Tree and Survive program to the
Northeast Ohio community.
In the event of a missing person, please contain the location of the Point Last Seen (PLS). Use judgment of a lost person’s behavior based on their age, physical condition and knowledge of the area to determine and contain the outer limits of the search area. If possible, provide information such as a photo of the individual and description of clothing and other articles being carried or discarded. Topographical and aerial maps of the area are
extremely helpful if available.
Training in Cuyahoga, Geauga & Portage Counties.
Our Mission
- To provide certified, professional, and rapid response K9 Search Teams directly into the hands of Northern Ohio Law Enforcement and Emergency Service Agencies.
- To behave both with wisdom and as an “admirable servant” consistent with the ethics of a Search & Rescue professional and in harmony with the National Association of Search & Rescue mission.
- To strive to recruit and assist members to meet the standards of national organizations.
- To help train and equip dog and handler teams to respond to searches for missing or lost persons in wilderness, rural or urban areas for live find only.
- To focus on education to prevent individuals from becoming lost or missing.
HOW DO SAR DOGS WORK?
All humans, alive or dead, constantly emit microscopic particles bearing human scent. Millions of these are airborne and are carried by the wind for considerable distances. The air scenting SAR dog is trained to locate the scent of any human in a specific search area. The dog is not restricted to the missing person's track and can search long after the track is obliterated. Many air scenting search dogs are also trained in trailing/scent discrimination.
While specific training methods and operating procedures may vary from unit to unit, the basic concept of searching with air scenting dogs is quite uniform (based on the pioneering work of Bill Syrotuck).
Such uniformity enables SAR-responsible agencies to know what to expect when they request search dogs, and to know how to best deploy them in the field. It also enables teams from different units to work together on large-scale searches.
